Personally, I don't mind if they change the mechanics or even the generic look of things (e.g. X-Men costumes leather instead of spandex) as long as they are true to the spirit and the personality of the characters and the mythology.

My favourite superhero movie is Batman Begins -- in my opinion, it took liberties but stayed closest by far to the true spirit of the character and his world.

(And the uber-fans are ALWAYS going to go crazy over something. It's what makes them uber-fans.) :-)

I'm with you there on HPATGOF. It was like the Cole's Notes of Harry Potter movies. (In my mind, only one of the HP movies really hit the mark -- HPATPOA.)

Haven't people learned from the LOTR movies and Spiderman -- people respond VERY WELL when movies are faithful to the source material.

Grrr...

I know. Deviation can be ok, IF IT IS JUSTIFIED.

But when things are done just because the filmmakers are lazy or don't care, that makes me angry.

And you wouldn't like me when I'm angry.

I don't want to go into it too much (spoiler-avoidance software set to stun) but I found the actual movie itself to be choppy and poorly put together, with bad editing (and one HUGE editing screwup), weak dramatic pacing, and gapping plot holes. And I don't know why the movie cost so much because the effects looked CHEAP.

And that's all before considering the original source material and how they ignored it, ran over it, threw it into the shredder. And I'm fine with changing things, but do it for a REASON! Not just because you can or because (what it seemed to me) you just don't care. Goodwill of the built-in fans is a huge marketing tool -- why kick them in the face?

And my one SPOILER ALERT:

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

(This is when I screamed on the inside, and whimpered a little on the outside):

Wolverine: "I'm the only one that can stop her!"

Me: Except for maybe that kid Leech that the whole movie has been about who has the ability to neutralise all mutant powers that you've all been hunting for for the whole movie and you guys have just rescued and now you are letting him just run away with everyone else just when he could possibly become FREAKING USEFUL?!?!!! EEEEEEEEEDIOTS!

And let's not even talk about Angel. *shudder*

There really is not any comic book movie that stays true to the comics, so before you see any of the movies you should take yourself away from that and try to enjoy the movie itself.

I think they used the characters well, and created an entertaining movie. They make these movies to let fans see their favourite characters in a more real life looking environment, and get new people interested in the characters.

What did you think of the movie as a self contained thing, rather than comparing the story to the comics or cartoons?
