To go back in time to the last century – I was absolutely irate when a ketchup company bogarded “Anticipation” (Carly Simon) for a TV commercial. I don’t even like the song that much, but I KNEW that from then on every time I heard that song I would think of that friggin’ ketchup (catsup)..

wen: That’s EXACTLY it. They should be smarter, because using a song like that for that purpose doesn’t make people associate the good feelings of the song with the product — it makes us mad at them for SULLYING the song in the first place. Honestly, I did eat at Wendy’s occasionally, but this has actually turned me off it. (That and the ever-drier burgers…)

Gah. I hate that. I thought Madison Ave had gotten the message that “Gen X’ers” (for serious want of a better term) hate being manipulated into buying something by having the music of our angst filled youth fill the background of a 30 second spot. Our generation seems to take that sort of thing personally and tends to veer away, not towards what they are trying to sell.

My other favorite right now? The Pepsi commercial that has a modified version of Plastic Bertrand’s “Ca Plane Pour Moi”. The thing is, I can’t hear the French version without hearing The Damned’s “Jet Boy Jet Girl” in my head. Which makes that Pepsi they’re trying to sell me an entirely different type of drink…
